He begins playing, he plays J.S.Bach\u2019s C Major Prelude to The Well-Tempered Clavier (Book 1). A classical Classical piece. The man is depicted in two videos\u2014one close up, one not\u2014that track around player and harpsichord in tandem. The piece finishes\u2014pause\u2014playing recommences, the sound now strange but also somehow familiar: the C Major Prelude in reverse. For this film, Ang Song-Ming learned to play the harpsichord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ang Song-Ming, tall and lanky, has an easy bearing, with a wry, sometimes incredulous humor that belies the precision and dedication of his work. Having studied literature at the National University of Singapore, Ang obtained a masters in Aural and Visual Cultures at Goldsmiths College, London. He now lives in Berlin, where I met him at his home one chilly day in December and again this week at Art Stage Singapore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"660\" height=\"371\" src=\"https:\/\/randian-art.s3.ap-east-1.amazonaws.com\/2023\/09\/zh-hans\/image-161.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/randian-art.s3.ap-east-1.amazonaws.com\/2023\/09\/zh-hans\/image-161-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/randian-art.s3.ap-east-1.amazonaws.com\/2023\/09\/zh-hans\/image-161-150x84.png 150w, https:\/\/randian-art.s3.ap-east-1.amazonaws.com\/2023\/09\/zh-hans\/image-161-500x281.png 500w, https:\/\/randian-art.s3.ap-east-1.amazonaws.com\/2023\/09\/zh-hans\/image-161.png 660w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ang Song Ming \u201cBackwards Bach\u201d (still from video)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.randian-online.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/AN-Song-Ming-10.jpg\"><\/a>\u201cBackwards Bach\u201d (2-channel video, 5:12, 2013) is a fine example of Ang\u2019s approach to art, combining deliberate personal dedication, concentration and effort with very precise expression\u2014reverse Bach!\u2014and a temporal shift of context, both alienating and beguiling. The latter makes all concerned concentrate more, whether Ang himself, his participants or viewers. Another example on display at&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artstagesingapore.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Art Stage Singapore<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;courtesy of&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.randian-online.com\/np_space\/singapore-tyler-print-institutestpi\/\">Singapore Tyler Print Institute<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;is \u201cBe True to your School\u201d (2010), a single-channel video in which Japanese people are asked to sing their old school song, combines music, awkward embarrassment, confusion and of course Proustian temporal shifts by asking someone to travel back in time to their school days (and to an instrument of instruction to engender infant loyalty to a pastoral and pedagogic institution).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"660\" height=\"189\" src=\"https:\/\/randian-art.s3.ap-east-1.amazonaws.com\/2023\/09\/zh-hans\/image-162.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13197\" srcset=\"https:\/\/randian-art.s3.ap-east-1.amazonaws.com\/2023\/09\/zh-hans\/image-162-300x86.png 300w, https:\/\/randian-art.s3.ap-east-1.amazonaws.com\/2023\/09\/zh-hans\/image-162-150x43.png 150w, https:\/\/randian-art.s3.ap-east-1.amazonaws.com\/2023\/09\/zh-hans\/image-162-500x143.png 500w, https:\/\/randian-art.s3.ap-east-1.amazonaws.com\/2023\/09\/zh-hans\/image-162.png 660w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ang Song Ming \u201cMusic Manuscripts\u201d (2013)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In \u201cMusic Manuscripts\u201d (2013), a set of black-line drawings made with architectural felt-tip pens, Ang tasked himself, somewhat obsessively, with exploring the umpteen possibilities for expanding the lines of the standard 5-line stave on standard music manuscript paper, used for handwriting musical scores. He only accepts perfectly completed drawings\u2014the least blemish disqualifies the work. The \u201cmusic\u201d lies in their production\u2014the regularity and interruptions in the lines, in the absence of notes. In fact, it is note-less note paper\u2014but ruled not blank: the ruled lines echoing the \u201crules\u201d Ang set for their production. Or put another way, in the absence of musical notes remains the rules. It would be risky to over-interpret that but nonetheless it is a theme. Another is the tension between \u201cscoring,\u201d both cutting and winning, and \u201cdrawing a line\u201d\u2014literally pulling out a \u201cline,\u201d from a pen or pencil, or a fishing line or even boat tether\u2014in the sense of linguistics, logic, time and space, and also linguistically in terms of setting a limitation. Present in every drawing is the conflict between the infinitive \u201cdrawing\u201d\u2014the endless line\u2014and an established rule, a consequential barrier, a line drawn (scored) in the sand-paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"660\" height=\"471\" src=\"https:\/\/randian-art.s3.ap-east-1.amazonaws.com\/2023\/09\/zh-hans\/image-163.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/randian-art.s3.ap-east-1.amazonaws.com\/2023\/09\/zh-hans\/image-163-300x214.png 300w, https:\/\/randian-art.s3.ap-east-1.amazonaws.com\/2023\/09\/zh-hans\/image-163-150x107.png 150w, https:\/\/randian-art.s3.ap-east-1.amazonaws.com\/2023\/09\/zh-hans\/image-163-420x300.png 420w, https:\/\/randian-art.s3.ap-east-1.amazonaws.com\/2023\/09\/zh-hans\/image-163.png 660w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ang Song Ming \u201cMusic Manuscripts\u201d (2013)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBe True to your School\u201d was made during Song-Ming\u2019s residency at ARCUS Project in Japan. Another work from this period is \u201cColor Scale\u201d (2010), seven color photographs of houses echoes a rainbow-colored child\u2019s Xylophone. And apparently here is the xylophone too. But no\u2014the echo has been inverted: the keyboard spray-painted to match the colors of the houses. It reveals how sometimes&nbsp;synaesthesia and recollection are reverse-engineered, not a figment of our imagination but something constructed&nbsp;<em>for<\/em>&nbsp;our imagination: content designed for reflection. It is sweet nostalgia spiked with sugar, salt and msg\u2014manufactured to meet our desire to confirm, to make us say yes! And this is the charm of Song-Ming\u2019s work. It plays&nbsp;<em>on<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>to<\/em>&nbsp;seemingly simple ideas of what we (think we) already like and know. We&nbsp;<em>think<\/em>&nbsp;we know about the \u201cWell tempered klavier,\u201d our old school song, even the score lines on manuscript paper. But this was all pre-programed. And yet, while the rules remain the rules, when set askew we seem them better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.randian-online.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/AN-Song-Ming-8.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.randian-online.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/AN-Song-Ming-8.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32636\" title=\"Ang Song Ming \" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ang Song Ming \u201cColor Scale\u201d (2013)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Biography<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Song-Ming Ang (b. 1980) studied at the National University of Singapore and Goldsmiths College London. He has presented solo shows with Spring Workshop (Hong Kong), FuturePerfect (Singapore), SoundFjord (London); and exhibited at K\u00fcnstlerhaus Bethanien (Berlin), Haus der Kulturen der Welt (Berlin), Armory Art Show (New York), Art Basel (Miami Beach), and the 3rd Singapore Biennale. Ang is the 2011 recipient of the Young Artist Award, conferred by the National Arts Council of Singapore.
