{"id":17600,"date":"2016-03-21T08:57:00","date_gmt":"2016-03-21T08:57:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.randian.art\/?p=17600"},"modified":"2023-12-09T09:45:13","modified_gmt":"2023-12-09T09:45:13","slug":"decking-the-halls-asian-gallery-highlights-at-abhk-16","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.randian.art\/zh-hans\/decking-the-halls-asian-gallery-highlights-at-abhk-16\/","title":{"rendered":"Decking the Halls: Asian gallery highlights at ABHK 16"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>For those not always in their midst in Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore or elsewhere in Asia, Art Basel Hong Kong is an annual chance to visit galleries whose programs don\u2019t always reach beyond the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Magician Space<\/strong>&nbsp;(booth 1C27), whose Beijing location has just doubled in size, will show nine artists with a slant towards painting and sculpture (one might notice how the younger sculptors\u2019 work compares with Ai Weiwei\u2019s). Look out for subtle works by Liu Chuang and Yu Honglei; Yu will also feature alongside his wife Guan Xiao (who just opened a solo exhibition at the CAPC MoCA in Bordeaux) at&nbsp;<strong>Antenna Space<\/strong>&nbsp;in the Insights section (booth 3D20).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"528\" height=\"791\" src=\"https:\/\/randian-art.s3.ap-east-1.amazonaws.com\/2023\/12\/zh-hans\/image-354.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17601\" srcset=\"https:\/\/randian-art.s3.ap-east-1.amazonaws.com\/2023\/12\/zh-hans\/GuzPL9BL-image-354-200x300.png 200w, https:\/\/randian-art.s3.ap-east-1.amazonaws.com\/2023\/12\/zh-hans\/image-354-100x150.png 100w, https:\/\/randian-art.s3.ap-east-1.amazonaws.com\/2023\/12\/zh-hans\/image-354.png 528w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Wu Chen at Magician Space<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Abstraction will likely prevail in 3C07, where&nbsp;<strong>Beijing Commune<\/strong>&nbsp;will include popular formalists Xie Molin, Wang Guangle and Shang Yixin, with a possible injection of humour from Song Ta. For a beautiful color gradient, head to&nbsp;<strong>Hadrien de Montferrand Gallery<\/strong>&nbsp;to see Zhang Xuerui (3D11).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Leo Xu Projects<\/strong>&nbsp;(3C04) is taking Li Qing to the fair, and is also hosting the offsite exhibition \u201cThe Mud of Compound Experience\u201d with the excellent Dublin gallery Mother\u2019s Tankstation at 98 Apliu Street, Kowloon. MTS\u2019s booth (1B25) at the fair includes Cui Jie, the first Chinese artist to be represented by the gallery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"528\" height=\"316\" src=\"https:\/\/randian-art.s3.ap-east-1.amazonaws.com\/2023\/12\/zh-hans\/image-355.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17604\" srcset=\"https:\/\/randian-art.s3.ap-east-1.amazonaws.com\/2023\/12\/zh-hans\/image-355-300x180.png 300w, https:\/\/randian-art.s3.ap-east-1.amazonaws.com\/2023\/12\/zh-hans\/image-355-150x90.png 150w, https:\/\/randian-art.s3.ap-east-1.amazonaws.com\/2023\/12\/zh-hans\/image-355-500x300.png 500w, https:\/\/randian-art.s3.ap-east-1.amazonaws.com\/2023\/12\/zh-hans\/image-355.png 528w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Zhang Xuerui at Hadrien de Montferrand<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to its booth 1D25,<strong>&nbsp;Galerie Urs Meile<\/strong>&nbsp;is showing Cheng Ran\u2019s much-lauded new work \u201cIn Course of the Miraculous\u201d at K11 (its first screening in Asia \u2013 spoiler alert: 9 hours) and \u201cLetter 249\u2033 as part of the Film section. Also in Film, Shanghai gallery&nbsp;<strong>Aike Dellarco<\/strong>&nbsp;(soon to open a West Bund space) will show identity-focused video by Tao Hui.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ink Studio<\/strong>, who showed contemporary master Zheng Chongbin at The Armory Show this year in New York, is taking recent works by Li Huansheng to Hong Kong (3D31). Some of the grid paintings coming to Basel were also part of \u201cInk Art: Past as Present in Contemporary China\u201d at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 2013. Also at Basel with a solo show,<strong>&nbsp;Galerie du Monde<\/strong>&nbsp;(booth 3D26) will have Stella Zhang\u2019s hybrid sculptural paintings and an installation from the&nbsp;<em>0-Viewpoint<\/em>&nbsp;series, pulling no punches with regard to sexuality and its connotations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"528\" height=\"267\" src=\"https:\/\/randian-art.s3.ap-east-1.amazonaws.com\/2023\/12\/zh-hans\/image-356.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17607\" srcset=\"https:\/\/randian-art.s3.ap-east-1.amazonaws.com\/2023\/12\/zh-hans\/image-356-300x152.png 300w, https:\/\/randian-art.s3.ap-east-1.amazonaws.com\/2023\/12\/zh-hans\/image-356-150x76.png 150w, https:\/\/randian-art.s3.ap-east-1.amazonaws.com\/2023\/12\/zh-hans\/image-356-500x253.png 500w, https:\/\/randian-art.s3.ap-east-1.amazonaws.com\/2023\/12\/zh-hans\/image-356.png 528w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Li Hasheng at Ink studio<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Mainland mainstay&nbsp;<strong>ShanghART<\/strong>&nbsp;(1C17) is having a group exhibition for the fair, to include well-rooted names such as Ding Yi, Geng Jianyi, Zhang Enli and Yang Fudong alongside newer ones like the photographer-pair Birdhead.&nbsp;<strong>Pearl Lam<\/strong>, too, is bringing multiple artists to booth 1D15, of course not without Zhu Jinshi and Su Xiaobai. Always strong for painters,<strong>&nbsp;Platform China<\/strong>&nbsp;(1B21) will show 17 artists, among them the unrestrained storyteller Ma Ke, master of melancholy Jia Aili and Zhao Zhao, who recently seems to have turned towards painting and away from sculpture and installation. For those of a different sensibility, see Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery (1C07), which will feature uber-kitsch figurative sculptures by Michael Parekowhai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At&nbsp;<strong>Arario<\/strong>&nbsp;in 1D26, don\u2019t miss works by Shanghai-based conceptual artist Gao Lei, who will also feature in White Space\u2019s display at 1B11\u2013the gallery invariably curates a good combination of works at Basel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also one for striking booth arrangements,&nbsp;<strong>Edouard Malingue<\/strong>&nbsp;will this year combine the works of Wang Wei, Ko Sin Tung, Yuan Yuan, Jeremy Everett and Wong Ping under the banner of \u201cintimacy\u201d\u2014fitting indeed for an art fair (booth 3C09).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"528\" height=\"329\" src=\"https:\/\/randian-art.s3.ap-east-1.amazonaws.com\/2023\/12\/zh-hans\/image-357.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17610\" srcset=\"https:\/\/randian-art.s3.ap-east-1.amazonaws.com\/2023\/12\/zh-hans\/image-357-300x187.png 300w, https:\/\/randian-art.s3.ap-east-1.amazonaws.com\/2023\/12\/zh-hans\/image-357-150x93.png 150w, https:\/\/randian-art.s3.ap-east-1.amazonaws.com\/2023\/12\/zh-hans\/image-357-481x300.png 481w, https:\/\/randian-art.s3.ap-east-1.amazonaws.com\/2023\/12\/zh-hans\/image-357.png 528w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Wang Wei at Edouard Malingue<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Chen Qiulin, who featured in&nbsp;<strong>A Thousand Plateaus<\/strong>\u2018 booth las year, will be back again in 2016 with photographer Li Lang and ink painter Wang Chuan (3D28); Chen is also part of the Film section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Long-standing Hong Kong gallery<strong>&nbsp;Osage<\/strong>, which can be relied upon for a strong show during Basel week, has a foot in both the Encounters and Insights sections this year with Au Hoi Lam (3D21), Roberto Chabet (1E03) and Tintin Wulia (3E14). Also in Encounters will be&nbsp;<strong>Kukje<\/strong>&nbsp;gallery artist Kyungah Ham with the tapestry series&nbsp;<em>Chandeliers for Five Cities&nbsp;<\/em>(2014-2015), in which opulent imagery should cause suspicion.
