{"id":18434,"date":"2015-05-12T05:40:00","date_gmt":"2015-05-12T05:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.randian.art\/?p=18434"},"modified":"2023-12-24T05:45:55","modified_gmt":"2023-12-24T05:45:55","slug":"frieze-art-fair-new-york-mark-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.randian.art\/zh-hans\/frieze-art-fair-new-york-mark-4\/","title":{"rendered":"Frieze Art Fair New York, Mark 4"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/friezenewyork.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Frieze<\/a>&nbsp;has established itself as the freshest major art fair\u2014a condensation of both youthful (among them&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.randian-online.com\/np_space\/antenna-space\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Antenna Space<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.c-l-e-a-r-i-n-g.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Clearing<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/aktnz.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kraupa-Tuskany Zeidler<\/a>) and blue chip (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gagosian.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gagosian<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/whitecube.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">White Cube<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hauserwirth.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hauser and Wirth<\/a>&nbsp;et al) contemporary galleries in a fashionable, un-stuffy atmosphere. Here, you can find barely dry paint from artists who may not have had their first solo show (see the \u201cFrame\u201d and \u201cFocus\u201d sections for emerging artists and galleries). While attitudes to Frieze Art Fair in London\u2014where it began eleven years ago\u2014can come across as somewhat jaded (its longevity there and changes in the market have contributed to a more conservative feel), in New York, which this week sees its fourth edition of the fair, one senses more pure expectations. This attitude was palpable in March at the Armory show, New York\u2019s local fair, where many participating galleries were already gazing beyond their booths to Frieze; some admitted to having saved the best works for it. That said, these expectations must be met and maintained by organizers and galleries alike for this stateside branch of the fair\u2014last year\u2019s edition did not pass without some criticism for slightly repetitive or safe displays and overcrowding by both visitors and works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite being the only art fair with \u201cfair\u201d in its title, the organizers claim for Frieze more democratic reach; the ambition to reach multiple audiences and encourage casual visitors as well as buyers is clear from the presentation, for instance with a book shop in the tent and energetic projects and installations\u2014often outdoors. Visitor numbers swell annually. Frieze also sports the best selection of in-show eateries of any of the major fairs, with menus reflecting the spirit of local dining as well as the fair\u2019s progressive cachet (new on the list is the hip downtown caf\u00e9 Morgenstern\u2019s which, we are promised, \u201cwill serve some of the city\u2019s most original and contemporary ice creams\u201d). An egalitarian attitude has been forced also into Frieze\u2019s labor practices following condemnation from local unions about preceding editions in New York. In what was seen as an elitist imposition of the site on Randall\u2019s Island (the bespoke tent purports to be the world\u2019s largest at a quarter of a mile long, and commands a high entrance fee for visitors to a rarefied trade show staffed largely by non-locals), complaints arose about disregard for socio-economic equality. Added to the show this year is a section called \u201cSpotlight\u201d for solo presentations of more historical work\u2014these, we are told, will lean towards work by female artists living outside the Europe and the US in the 1960s and 70s. The commissioned projects this year are curated by the High Line Art Director and curator Cecilia Alemani; these are massage chairs from Korakrit Arunanondchai, \u201chabitable paintings\u201d from Pia Camil, from Samara Golden, a room beneath the tent which somehow reveals the structure of the fair, personality tests from Aki Sasamoto, an outdoor collapsed structure by Allyson Vieira and, made by the fair itself, a tribute to the \u201cFlux-Labyrinth\u201d made by the Fluxus group of artists in 1976. The&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/friezeprojectsny.org\/sounds\/2015\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sounds<\/a>&nbsp;section will contain three works which incorporate archival and collage elements \u2013 the artists are Alicja Kwade, Sergei Tcherepnin and Xaviera Simmons. There will be four galleries in attendance from China: Antenna Space and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.randian-online.com\/np_space\/leo-xu-projects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Leo Xu Projects<\/a>&nbsp;(both from Shanghai) and, from Beijing,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.randian-online.com\/np_space\/boers-li-gallery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Boers-Li Gallery<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.randian-online.com\/np_space\/long-march-space\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Long March Space<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alongside Frieze, a number of satellite fairs take place in the same week, some of which have real traction.&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newartdealers.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NADA<\/a>&nbsp;(The New Art Dealers Alliance, a non-profit organization), in particular, is an artist-centric fair worth seeing. The&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.outsiderartfair.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Outsider Art Fair&nbsp;<\/a>has also been drawing attention with, as one might deduce from its title, artists and works from off-the-beaten art track (this year, many hail from New Zealand). New this year is the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/1-54.com\/new-york\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1:54 Contemporary African Art Fair<\/a>, and \u2013 occupying the Armory spot on Pier 94 \u2013&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.artmiaminewyork.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Art Miami New York<\/a>.
