{"id":11286,"date":"2013-10-03T08:51:00","date_gmt":"2013-10-03T08:51:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.randian.art\/?p=11286"},"modified":"2023-04-25T09:06:50","modified_gmt":"2023-04-25T09:06:50","slug":"monster-mash-the-melding-of-monster-and-mind","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.randian.art\/zh-hant\/monster-mash-the-melding-of-monster-and-mind\/","title":{"rendered":"Monster Mash: The Melding of Monster and Mind"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.randian-online.com\/np_event\/mental-logue-monster-logue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mental-logue\/Monster-logue<\/a>,\u201d&nbsp;<\/strong>group exhibition with Chu Chunteng, Lin Guan-Ming, I-Yeh Wu, Sung-Chih Chen, Kuo I-Chen, Hsienyu Cheng<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.randian-online.com\/np_space\/soka-art-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Soka Art Center Taipei<\/a>&nbsp;<\/strong>(2F, No.57, Sec.1, Dunhua South Road, Taipei, Taiwan, 10557) Jun 8\u2013Jul 21, 2013<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ridley Scott\u2019s classic film \u201cBlade Runner\u201d skillfully explored the ways in which artificial intelligence bestows humanity upon the machine, causing automatons to resemble monsters more and more with each passing iteration. In the movie, when a replicant utters the dying phrase \u201call those moments will be lost in time\u2026like tears in rain,\u201d the human poetry of these words strike the viewer with a flash of otherworldly beauty. In his film&nbsp;<em>Moon<\/em>, the director Duncan Jones takes the analysis of human emotion further, showing us the life of a lunar-bound clone and his longing for a home and a family which were never truly his. When the protagonist at last finds a way to call home, the familiar voice that greets him on the other end of the line is that of his original \u201cprogenitor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The greatest and most powerful prophecy of our digital age is this: the closer a machine resembles a human, the more monstrously uncanny it will appear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"660\" height=\"438\" src=\"https:\/\/randian-art.s3.ap-east-1.amazonaws.com\/2023\/04\/zh-hant\/image-181.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11287\" srcset=\"https:\/\/randian-art.s3.ap-east-1.amazonaws.com\/2023\/04\/zh-hant\/image-181-300x199.png 300w, https:\/\/randian-art.s3.ap-east-1.amazonaws.com\/2023\/04\/zh-hant\/image-181-150x100.png 150w, https:\/\/randian-art.s3.ap-east-1.amazonaws.com\/2023\/04\/zh-hant\/image-181-452x300.png 452w, https:\/\/randian-art.s3.ap-east-1.amazonaws.com\/2023\/04\/zh-hant\/image-181.png 660w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">I-Yeh Wu, \u201cIn The Future,\u201d single-channel video, 3m 44s, 2013<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While the vast majority of new-media discourse in art considers this phenomenon from the perspective of humanity, the young Taiwanese curators Wang Yunglin and Wang Po-Wei take the opposite approach. On show at Soka Art Center in Taipei, their exhibition \u201cMental-logue\/Monster-logue\u201d aims to take on the perspective of the \u201cmind in the machine\u201d through the combined approaches of exhibition and public discourse, exploring anew the possibilities of new media art. The exhibition\u2019s name raises two key words, \u201cMental\u201d and \u201cMonster.\u201d The former refers to the mentality of the artist as well as the artist\u2019s transformation of his mental state and imagination through media; the latter refers to the ways in which technological products break through the limitations of their material state, expressing emotions and states of being that closely mimic humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The show features the work of young Taiwanese creatives immersed in digital culture, and allows their imaginations to roam free. Hsienyu Cheng\u2019s piece \u201cAfter Life ver.2.0 \u2014 Life Comes and Goes\u201d combines the classic arcade game\u00a0<em>Space Invaders<\/em>\u00a0with a bug-catcher. The number of insects trapped within the body of the game console represents the number of \u201clives\u201d remaining to the gamer. Kuo I-Chen\u2019s \u201cShadow of Shadows\u201d installation integrates a copy machine with a closed-circuit monitor, giving the viewer a perpetually cycling sense of d\u00e9j\u00e0 vu. Meanwhile I-Yeh Wu\u2019s pieces \u201cDollar-Post\u201d and \u201cIn the Future\u201d both depart from the mechanism of electronic mail to contemplate what room there remains for the concept of \u201cdelivery\u201d to \u201cmutate\u201d in a technological environment which constantly renews itself. In addition to pieces which employ specific devices such as game consoles or copiers, the show also features work attempting to explore the every-day beasts of technology through form and content. Both Lin Guan-Ming\u2019s \u201cSea \u2013 Waves\u201d and Sung-Chih Chen\u2019s \u201cCloud-Blending Viewpoints\u201d depart from a point of natural beauty, exploring the ways in which digital mapping techniques can modify how we think about natural landscapes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wang Yung-Lin, one of the curators, believes that \u201cthis is an era of mutual creation between man and machine.\u201d The relationship between the two key concepts of the \u201cmental\u201d and the \u201cmonstrous\u201d is a tangled web, but it also reflects a creative state unique to the 21st century as art attempts to keep up with the fast-paced advancement of technology. The least \u201ctechnologically advanced\u201d piece on show is Chu Chunteng\u2019s \u201cRescue Mission No. 3 \u2014 I Will Be With You,\u201d featuring two slabs of meat placed beneath a whirling insect-repelling device. The work hints at a dark reality: in the end, no matter how far technology advances, humanity is only so much raw meat. Despite of the efforts of the perpetually spinning \u201cinsect repellent device,\u201d our rot and ruin are inevitable. Under such a premise, the ability of art to confer life and \u201cmentality\u201d upon the omnipresent machinery in our lives seems all the more valuable. Each of the works shows us how artists are able to use technology to stretch and even break through the boundaries of life.
