{"id":11575,"date":"2013-03-15T10:59:00","date_gmt":"2013-03-15T10:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.randian.art\/?p=11575"},"modified":"2023-04-26T10:59:48","modified_gmt":"2023-04-26T10:59:48","slug":"the-demise-of-the-things-wu-xiaochuan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.randian.art\/zh-hant\/the-demise-of-the-things-wu-xiaochuan\/","title":{"rendered":"The Demise Of The Things: Wu Xiaochuan"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.798whitebox.com\/en\/a_exh_on.php\"><strong>\u201cThe Demise Of The Things,\u201d Wu Xiaochuan Solo Exhibition<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.798whitebox.com\/en\/a_index.php\"><strong>White Box Museum Of Art<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;(798 Art District, No.2 Jiuxianqiao Road, Chaoyang District, Beijing)&nbsp;<strong>Mar 9 \u2013 Apr 9, 2013<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For art that muses over the nostalgia of the past, \u201cmonumentality\u201d is a necessary characteristic: Caspar David Friedrich\u2019s desolate monasteries or Gothic cathedrals, John William Waterhouse\u2019s distressed<em>&nbsp;<\/em>\u201cLady of Shalott,\u201d or John Everett Millais\u2019 \u201cOrphelia\u201d sinking in the river \u2014 there is a sorrowful sublime whether it be figures, architecture, or landscapes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet the \u201cdemise\u201d in Wu Xiaochuan\u2019s work is rather more comprehensive a concept, which is to say that the times are not the focus of consideration here. The subjects he depicts include all kinds of images that can conjure forth associations with death: ten leaders from modern times who died from unnatural causes (\u201cIncomplete Forms: Ten Portraits of Kings,\u201d 2010\u20132012), several mausoleums of the Tang emperors (the style of which easily reminds viewers of Anselm Kiefer), old newspapers, human skulls, horse and sheep bones without clear traces of time or age, as well as ancient architecture such as temples and pagodas and so forth. What is more, many of Wu Xiaochuan\u2019s paintings have the air of sculptural reliefs: extremely dull tones and thickly lathered paints on the canvas, with diagonal jabs purposely added, which thereby manifest the physiology of rocks in tomb murals. With such images about death, Wu Xiaochuan attempts to realize a sense of transcendence and something that is \u201cantique and indestructible\u201d (1).
