{"id":14177,"date":"2016-08-16T06:33:00","date_gmt":"2016-08-16T06:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.randian.art\/?p=14177"},"modified":"2023-10-13T06:37:53","modified_gmt":"2023-10-13T06:37:53","slug":"ye-funa-nailhenge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.randian.art\/zh-hant\/ye-funa-nailhenge\/","title":{"rendered":"Ye Funa: Nailhenge"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Ye Funa: \u201cNailhenge\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.randian-online.com\/np_space\/space-station\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Space Station<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;(4 Jiuxianqiao Road, 798 Art Zone, Chaoyang District, Beijing),&nbsp;<strong>July 2\u201331, 2016<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the concluding exhibition for the&nbsp;<em>Curated Nail&nbsp;<\/em>project, \u201cNailhenge\u201d seemed a little on the somber side. Here were neither the creative manicure sessions of past events, nor the cosplay girls from \u201cPeep Stream\u201d. In addition to older works like \u201cNail Diamonds Treasure Chest\u201d and \u201cNail Bank\u201d, Ye Funa showed a recent series entitled&nbsp;<em>Capture the Nail<\/em>, made using cheap trinkets from small-merchandise wholesale markets, and&nbsp;<em>Nailhenge: A Small Victory<\/em>, a new short film shot in this gallery-turned-green-canopy-space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The turn from \u201cFamily Album\u201d to \u201cCurated Nails\u201d marks Ye\u2019s transition from a research-oriented practice based on texts and history to a participatory one drawing from the realities of everyday life. In 2014, Ye founded \u201cExhibitionist: Curated Nails\u201d on Wechat\u2019s public platform, a curatorial project that allowed fingernails to appropriate the exhibition function of galleries and museums. By 2016, Ye had collected over 150 submissions. In conjunction with successively promoting the proposals on the public account named \u201cExhibitionist\u201d, Ye has also collaborated with various institutions for pop-up shows, including Ying Space, Nanjing Arts Institute\uff0cMoCA Pavillion, and JNBY\u2019s multiple storefronts, among others. Essentially, the motive driving Ye\u2019s implementation of this project comes from the individual\u2019s need for manicure makeovers\u2014she contemplates how to transfer conventional exhibition-making to feature nails. As the project developed, Ye\u2019s interest in nails expanded to the realm of pathology and sociology. The word \u201cexhibitionist\u201d originally indicated a perverse behavior in which someone achieves sexual satisfaction by exposing their genitals. In the context of Ye\u2019s work, however, it suggests more a certain compulsion for spontaneous showcasing in public space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.randian-online.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/%E5%B1%95%E8%A7%88%E7%8E%B0%E5%9C%BA-3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.randian-online.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/%E5%B1%95%E8%A7%88%E7%8E%B0%E5%9C%BA-3-528x290.jpg\" alt=\"\u53f6\u752b\u7eb3\uff0c\" class=\"wp-image-78618\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u53f6\u752b\u7eb3\uff0c\u201d\u7532\u5929\u4e0b\u201d\uff0c\u5c55\u89c8\u73b0\u573a Ye Funa, \u201cNailhenge\u201d\uff0cinstallation view<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Arranged on transparent display shelves, the&nbsp;<em>Capture the Nail<\/em>&nbsp;series is made up of nails adorned with rhinestones, puppets, insects, organs, plants, hair, and other plastic materials. On first sight it seems to resemble a mini cult movie theater with a penchant for porn and gore. Although the work seeks to comment on how nails pertain to pathology and sociology, the dazzling array of trinkets is not lacking in feminine accessories such as bows, high heels, and diamonds. This manicure-themed exhibition makes it difficult for viewers to ignore a stereotypical female desire for bodily embellishment. But judging from the vulgar color palette, cheap materials, and crude craftsmanship, the work deliberately rebels against the exquisite refinement sought in popular manicure practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paired with an upbeat electronic soundtrack, the short&nbsp;<em>A Small Victory<\/em>&nbsp;recounts the process of Ye navigating \u201cmanicure\u201d culture with a friend. The artist fabricated the \u201dgenesis\u201d of manicure culture, in which \u201cmanicure\u201d \u2014a culture intimately intertwined with the lives of women since the beginning of time\u2014seems to have attained a legitimate place. Correspondingly, Ye made ten person-sized nails, taking both Eastern and Western female mythological characters as inspiration for the nail designs. In addition to symbols of N\u00fcwa and the goddess of love in orthodox mythology, Ye also incorporated elements from different subcultures, especially manga culture. For example, the scepter adorned with crowns, hearts, and feathers is reminiscent of the role of Usagi Tsukino&nbsp;from the Japanese Manga series&nbsp;<em>Sailor Moon<\/em>&nbsp;(\u201cmanicure\u201d is the initial step in the Sailor Soldier transformation process\u2014it is as though it can bestow special powers).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When talking about the works of female artists, critics habitually employ words like \u201csubversive\u201d, \u201csatire\u201d, \u201cparody\u201d, and \u201cself-amusement\u201d in order to project \u201crebellious\u201d personalities onto the artists. Although discourse on female artists is no longer a novelty, it still remains a favorite topic for museums, galleries, and curators to use to generate controversy. Whenever institutions put up shows featuring female artists, they almost never fail either to emphasize their \u201cparticular\u201d identity with phrases like \u201cwomen\u2019s living conditions and spiritual qualities are the benchmark for measuring the achievements of civilized society\u201d, or to affirm the value of their cultural production with statements such as &nbsp;\u201cthe works of female artists are becoming more and more powerful\u2026etc.\u201d At times, these circumstances result in female artists refraining from commenting on topics related to gender and refusing altogether that which is \u201cfemale\u201d. In contrast, \u201cNailhenge\u201d does not shy away from women\u2019s love for makeovers. The beauty inherent in manicure culture encompasses not only the sexy and the elegant, but also the weird and the bizarre. The attribution of beauty depends on the individual and what is attractive to them; the desire to look good is but a form of self-amusement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a
