Although the \u201csurface meanings\u201d of these new terms are detached from the cognitive systems we are accustomed to everyday, patterns and traces of meaning remain detectable in her finished works made from existing materials. \u201cAnt Bone\u201d draws from the many contradictions found in the ant: its minuscule size and formidable strength, its tough yet restrictive exoskeleton, and the delicacy of its unyielding frame. These two concise words together encompass a wealth of description\u2014as befits the exhibition\u2019s spirit of simplicity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The exhibition space has been divided into two parts\u2014\u201cdark\u201d and \u201clight\u201d. Pieces in the \u201clight\u201d part extend the basic structure of the&nbsp;<em>Wood<\/em>&nbsp;series that the artist began exploring in 2008. Hu Xiaoyuan\u2019s creative output has slowly transitioned from private subject matter to more abstract concepts. As a result, her work remains quite \u201cpolished\u201d or \u201crefined\u201d, but it no longer reveals any archetypal \u201cgendered\u201d characteristics. In this series, Hu Xiaoyuan has copied the grain of wood onto silk, using lines as thin and fine as skeins of hair. According to the artist, this is a visual translation of the Buddhist concept of sunyata or \u201cemptiness\u201d. Undoubtedly, the act of painting the textures of the grain of wood on silk demands a high level of concentration. Once the mind is clear of external distractions, the process of retracing the patterns of nature mirrors the Buddhist spiritual journey into the highest realms of Dharma. However, the religious aspects of Hu\u2019s work may be overly obscure, and they might not move viewers\u2014at least not immediately. The seemingly solid structure of these works actually rests on the verge of stability derived from the meticulous arithmetic calculations. The artist has designed an ingenious \u201ccoat\u201d which restricts the \u201cmovement\u201d of her artworks, and yet the tenuous appearance of this reinforcing structure temporarily robs the framework of its rigidity. Stability and turmoil, freedom and limitation, tenacity and weakness\u2014 all of these concepts co-exist in her work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the pieces in the \u201clight\u201d section are abstract, then the pieces in the \u201cdark\u201d section are concrete representations. For instance, in the 5-channel video work \u201cThe Character of Human Nature\u201d, the camera trains its focus on the upheld arms on two people\u2014who steady their arms to avoid a needle from piercing a balloon. Another segment of the video limits the frame to showing three right hands, with each hand drawing a circle on another right wrist\u2014the subjects are thus again compelled to work together within the limitations of their motions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.randian-online.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/%E2%80%9D%E8%83%A1%E6%99%93%E5%AA%9B%EF%BC%9A%E8%9A%81%E9%AA%A8%E2%80%9C%EF%BC%8C%E5%B1%95%E8%A7%88%E7%8E%B0%E5%9C%BA-Hu-Xiaoyuan-Ant-Bone-exhibition-view11.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\"
