{"id":15008,"date":"2015-05-25T09:38:00","date_gmt":"2015-05-25T09:38:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.randian.art\/?p=15008"},"modified":"2023-10-26T09:56:32","modified_gmt":"2023-10-26T09:56:32","slug":"secret-crossing-yuan-gong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.randian.art\/zh-hant\/secret-crossing-yuan-gong\/","title":{"rendered":"Secret Crossing, Yuan Gong"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.randian-online.com\/np_event\/yuan-gong-secret-crossing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Yuan Gong: Secret Crossing<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.randian-online.com\/np_space\/tianjin-art-museum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Tianjin Art Museum<\/strong>&nbsp;(<\/a>60 Pingjiang Dao, Hexi District 300201 Tianjin, China),&nbsp;<strong>Apr 26\u2014May 20, 2015<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following his show in Wuhan, the \u201cCity of Rivers,\u201d Yuan Gong arrived in Tianjin, \u201cThe Base of Nine Rivers.\u201d This exhibition can be viewed in two ways; the first would be to observe it with a degree of scrupulousness, passing one\u2019s eyes over each and every minute detail, taking a careful inventory of relevant information. The show is divided into two parts: a live performance and a multi-panel image installation. The opening performance portion, entitled \u201cScherzo,\u201d was allegedly adapted from an extract from German playwright Heiner M\u00fcller\u2019s, Die Hamletmaschine. Most of the performers are blind; lined up around the gallery space, one after another they come to the microphone and proclaim \u201cI am Hamlet.\u201d On a makeshift stage at the center of the space, several blackboards stand erect in homage to Joseph Beuys\u2019 \u201cFour Blackboards\u201d. Metal barrel \u201ccannons\u201d let out rings of smoke at fixed intervals, and a pile of dismantled piano parts lies beside an array of screws, nuts and bolts. Nearby, strips of red cloth were suspended from the ceiling, connected at the bottom to clattering wooden contraptions on the floor. (Pictures of the site would undoubtedly provide a more clear-cut visual.) Another work called \u201cChanted Ode\u201d is composed of several huge projection screens. Most of the images are the facial expressions of the blind performers. Next to each screen is written one word such as \u201cwe\u201d or \u201cfreedom\u201d and so on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But such micromanaged observation may not be the easiest way to actually understand this exhibition or build meaning out of it. At least, the majority of audience members would likely respond with looks of utter bewilderment\u2014unsurprising, given that in the absence of over-interpretation, it is very difficult to find any relationship between any two elements in this show: Hamlet and a piano? Nuts, bolts and blackboards?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rather than adopting a further, simplified point of view, maybe it is best to be content with the \u201csuperficial\u201d understanding our elemental observation engenders. Perhaps only in this way will we see it all more clearly: whether it is the live performance or the content projected onto these screens, here we have a set of symbols included among which are \u201ctheatre,\u201d \u201cmarginalized populations\u201d (the blind), \u201ctradition\u201d (gun powder, weaving machines)\u2026 The straightforward vocabulary of the projection screens also proves a strong attempt at meaningfulness with terms like \u201cfreedom,\u201d \u201cinfinity,\u201d \u201ctime and space,\u201d \u201ctruth,\u201d \u201cimmortality,\u201d \u201cturmoil\u201d\u2014words that betray a desirous clinging to ideology. Of course, we also see here references to both literature and classic cases of modern art: some experimental theater here, a pile of destroyed piano parts there (reminiscent of the destructive spirit of Dada or of Nam June Paik\u2019s vandalism), a reproduction of Beuys\u2019 blackboards. The forms Yuan Gong\u2019s works take entail a similar abundance of choice; there are installations, performances, projections and even found objects. Yuan Gong\u2019s \u201cThe Scented Air: Much More Than 6000m3\u201d at the 2013 Venice Biennale showed a video recording of an airborne vehicle puffing out smoke, also accompanied by a \u201cfreedom\u201d word list on loop, guiding the viewer\u2019s train of thought and imagination in one calculated direction. All of this abundance serves to express one thing: that this is indeed one complete, comprehensive, and stylish array of \u201ccontemporary art.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image
